How to Care for Satin Dresses

Satin rewards a little attention. Here is how to wash, steam, store and travel with satin dresses so they keep their fluid drape and soft shine for years.

A satin dress is one of the most rewarding pieces in a woman's wardrobe. It catches light, moves beautifully and turns a simple evening into an occasion. It also asks for a little care. These are the habits that keep satin looking new.

Always read the care label first

Satin is a weave, not a fibre. It can be made from silk, polyester, acetate or blends, and each behaves differently. The label inside every FELENI dress is the final word on washing temperature and method — follow it before any general advice.

Washing satin gently

When hand washing is allowed, use cool water and a mild detergent made for delicates. Press the water through the fabric rather than rubbing or wringing it. Rinse in cool water and roll the dress in a clean towel to remove moisture. Never twist satin; it creases and can lose its sheen.

Drying without damage

Lay the dress flat or hang it on a padded hanger away from direct sunlight and radiators. Heat and strong sun can yellow light colours such as ivory and champagne.

Steam instead of iron

A handheld steamer is the safest way to release creases from a satin midi or maxi dress. If you must iron, turn the dress inside out, use the lowest setting and place a cotton cloth between the iron and the fabric.

Storing satin between wears

Hang satin dresses on wide, padded hangers in a breathable garment bag. Leave space in the wardrobe so the fabric is not crushed. For long storage, fold with acid-free tissue paper at each fold line.

Travelling with satin

Roll the dress loosely in tissue paper rather than folding it flat. Hang it in a steamy bathroom on arrival and most travel creases will fall out within minutes.

Small marks and spills

Blot, never rub. Treat marks quickly with cool water and take valuable pieces to a professional dry cleaner when in doubt.
